Natural Toner

Toning the skin serves many purposes. It can serve as an astringent, to help retain moisture and to firm up the skin. Toners can also be clarifying, anti-aging, and cleansing.

To make your own toners look below to decide what toner is best for you.

My Favorite Toner-Clarifying Toner

This is my absolute favorite toner. It feels great, balances my skin pH and clears out clogged pores. A healthy pH is essential to clear skin. The pH should be around 5.5, that means that it is slightly acidic. Water is usually neutral at a pH of 7. Vinegar is perfect for helping the skin maintain an acidic pH. This recipe should perfectly balance the skins' pH. You don't want to use too much vinegar or the skin will get too acidic.

1/2 c water

1 TBS organic apple cider vinegar

10 drops lemon essential oil

7 drops tea tree essential oil

Mix together all ingredients and pour into a bottle, preferably one with a pump or spray. Bottles and jars can be purchased at www.sunburstbottle.com or www.specialtybottle.com.

Toner for Oily Skin

If you have oily skin you will want to try this toner. Witch hazel is a great astringent and helps clean out pores.

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup witch hazel

40 drops lavender, lemon or tea tree oil

Mix together all ingredients and pour into a bottle, preferably one with a pump or spray. Bottles and jars can be purchased at www.sunburstbottle.com or www.specialtybottle.com.

Anti-Aging Toner

In my anti-aging toners, I like to include alpha hydroxy acids. Alpha hydroxy acid will gently exfoliate the skin while moisturizing it. To prevent aging you don't want to use anything that will dry the skin out.

Alpha hydroxy acid can be purchased at wwww.lotioncrafter.com. The name to look for is Multifruit BSC. These acids come from fruit and sugar. You want to be careful with this product because it can burn the skin if used at 100%. I keep mine in a cupboard where the kids can't get to it.

For a basic toner you will only need Multifruit BSC and water.

1 cup water

1 TBS Multifruit BSC

Optional ingredients:

1 tsp aloe vera (to tighten and tone)

1 TBS witch hazel (to help balance pH)

10 drops lavender, orange, lemon or tea tree essential oils

Mix selected ingredients together in a pyrex container and pour into bottle or two bottles. Bottles and jars can be purchased at www.sunburstbottle.com or www.specialtybottle.com.

Body Sprays

Body sprays are extremely easy to make. They are light, refreshing and a great way to smell great while cooling down.

2/3 cup water

2 TBS witch hazel

1 TBS essential oils - lemon, lime, lavender, orange, grapefruit, geranium, peppermint, etc.

Mix together all ingredients and pour into a bottle, preferably one with a pump or spray. Bottles and jars can be purchased at www.sunburstbottle.com or www.specialtybottle.com.

You can also make body sprays from hydrosols or simply use the hydrosol as the spray.

You can purchase hydrosols by clicking here and searching hydrosols. You can dilute them with water if the smell is too strong.

They have many natural hydrosols. I really like the rose and lime.
