Organic Sunscreen

Why should you use organic sunscreen? Because most of the sunscreens on the market are full of hormone disrupting chemicals!

To start making your organic sunscreen you will need three basic ingredients. That's it. Only three ingredients!

First you need organic coconut oil. I get my coconut oil from here or here. You will also need titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which can be purchased here. This sunscreen will be pretty white. If you would like your sunscreen to be tinted you can purchase yellow and brown iron oxides from the same website that you would purchase the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

These ingredients are all pretty inexpensive ranging from $0.75 to $1.00 an ounce.

You will also need a clean jar for recipe 1 or a bottle for recipe 2 with at least a 4 ounce capacity.

Homemade Sunscreen Recipe 1

1/3 cup organic coconut oil

1 TBS titanium dioxide

2 tsp zinc oxide

Put the coconut oil in a jar. Stir in the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide one at a time. You may add more if you feel like you need more protection. The recipe above gives 17-20 SPF and is not waterproof.

If the pigment is too white stir in a very small pinch of brown iron oxide and a very small pinch of yellow iron oxide. Add in pinches until you get the desired tint.

Homemade Sunscreen Recipe 2

If you would prefer to keep your sunscreen in a bottle you can mix in some aloe vera. The mixture will separate so you will need to shake before using.

1/3 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup aloe vera

1 TBS + 1 tsp titanium dioxide

1 TBS zinc oxide

Melt the coconut oil in a double boiler. I put a pyrex container in a pan of water on low heat. When the coconut oil is melted stir in the aloe vera. Then stir in the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Pour the mixture in a bottle.

These sunscreens are not waterproof and need to be reapplied every couple of hours.

I am not an expert on sun protection. I am just telling you what works for me. Please use caution to avoid getting burned.

After Sun Treatement

In the event of a sunburn use this recipe to help skin heal faster and take away the pain.

1/2 cup aloe vera

1/4 cup coconut oil

2 TBS lavender oil

Mix together and store in bottle or jar. Shake well before using. Aloe vera is cooling for the skin. Coconut oil helps the skin heal. Lavender oil takes the heat out and prevents skin damage from the burn.
